Year 7 Assess Diagnostic Quizzes

Year 7 Assess Diagnostic Quizzes

"Really delighted with the content"  Marianne Good, Gosforth Central Middle School

Formative assessment can improve teaching and learning - but needs fast and accurate information about student understanding. Tests tell you only what students remember - you need to know if there were specific concepts students struggled with. And whether they can 'apply' knowledge to unfamiliar situations - the yardstick of understanding at GCSE.

The Diagnostic Quizzes use original, carefully designed multiple questions. In 10-15 minutes, you can conduct the quiz, and have students review why they got answers wrong.  Pack 1 covers the 25 key concepts in a typical year 7 course (11-12 year olds).

Mastery & Reassess Diagnostic Quizzes The quizzes reveal whether students have grasped the concept (so you can move on) or whether the struggled with a part of it (so need a re-think). The multiple choice quizzes are also designed to flag up specific misconceptions. There are two quizzes per concept - so you test once, give students extra learning opportunities, and then re-assess to see if they got it -  mastery learning in action. Each quiz is short, targeting one concept with 6 questions: 4 Know and 2 Apply.  The questions are deliberately designed to reveal misconceptions and partial understanding so you can see which students need more learning.

Student self-assessment The quizzes come with clear feedback - full explanations of why the correct answers are right and why the others are wrong.

Dramatic increase in learning

Really delighted with the content! My headteacher observed me doing my first rethink session. She was absolutely delighted with the learning she saw taking place and is supportive of us investing in it. Much of the success of the mastery for all assessment has been in the bespoke response to the misconceptions so clearly pinpointed by the diagnostic test. The tasks quickly and effectively address these misconceptions and the extend tasks are a fabulous way to take most able pupils to a greater depth in the learning. The dramatic increase in the marks between the diagnostic and the retest are testament to the success of the reteaching interventions.
