Project Engage
ENGAGE was a European Commission project to give the students the skills to apply their scientific knowledge to real-life issues. We are re-publishing the innovative created by members of the Mastery Science team, working for Sheffield Hallam University. ENGAGE activities have been used by 15,000 teachers across 11 partner countries: UK. Greece, Germany, France, Romania, Israel, Spain, Norway, Switzerland, Lithuania, and Cyprus.

Campaigners in support of an EU-wide ban point out that nicotine from e-cigarettes may contribute to heart disease and cancers, as well as damaging the brains of developing foetuses. In this activity students decide whether they support a ban. They apply their knowledge of particle theory to decide whether exhaled nicotine can reach non-vapers nearby, and then learn to judge risks to decide whether the benefits of a ban on indoor vaping outweigh the risks.

Learning objective

Particles: draw before and after diagrams of particles to explain observations

Estimate risks: weigh up the benefits and risks of an application of science to make a decision

Blueprint curriculum link

Lesson 1

Unit: Substances & particles

Concept: Particle model: Substances can be modelled as small particles in motion. The 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa was the largest in history, and killed more than 11,000 people. Even survivors are suffering long term health problems. Scientists have responded quickly with a number of possible vaccines. In this activity students are asked if they would volunteer to be part of the safety trial. They gather information from different sources, weigh up risks and benefits and apply what they know about genes to decide if it is a risk worth taking

Learning objective

Weigh up risks and benefits and make a decision, using scientific knowledge of the function of genes.

Blueprint curriculum link

Unit: Genetics

Concept: Genes: Inherited characteristics are the result of genetic information, in the form of sections of DNA called genes, being transferred from parents to offspring during reproduction

Skills: Decisions: Estimate the seriousness of the hazards of an experiment or technology

Learning stage: Analyse

Activity contents

Teachers guide

PowerPoint file

The activity is delivered as a zip file.
